Acupuncture for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
A recent systematic review and meta-analysis took a look at the effect of acupuncture on type 2 diabetes mellitus. After a systematic search of the literature, the researchers found 21 studies, comprising of 1943 participants. They found that blood glucose levels were reduced in those that used acupuncture alongside medical treatments. They also noted that blood lipids, blood pressure control and weight gain were all managed more effectively in participants that received acupuncture compared with those that did not.
The researchers concluded that, ‘acupuncture could be recommended as a supplementary treatment in the management of [type 2 diabetes mellitus].’
So many of the long-term and knock on issues of diabetes are related to the additional blood sugar, blood pressure and weight gain, so to see evidence of acupunctures ability to reduce all of these is very heartening. Though in my experience it is pretty self-evident that the people I see are having reductions in their symptoms and are more able to control and prevent any further issues.
At my clinics
I help sufferers of diabetes manage their condition and reduce and prevent secondary conditions, such as peripheral neuropathy. Indeed, it should be noted that acupuncture and herbal medicine has been used for at least 2,000 years to treat diabetes. One of the initial tests was to either taste the urine for sweetness, or to put it near ants and see if they were attracted to it. Thankfully there are better methods these days!
