Could acupuncture and Chinese medicine be the future of medicine?

Perhaps I was a bit cheeky in the title of this blog. Perhaps I am hugely bias (I probably am). However, the more I look at medical research and the direction in which it is going the more heartened I am. For so long the medical approach has been a reductionist and generalized one. Looking at ever smaller tissues, cells, compounds, and molecules for the answer to medical issues and taking averages over ever widening [...]

Is Western medicine evidence based?

The British Medical Journal has been reviewing the evidence base of 3000 therapies carried out on the NHS. Here is a simple graph of their findings. It is quite startling to say the least. The more you look at it the more paradigm shattering it is. Western medicine loves to hold the narrative high ground that it is evidence based. It is the best medicine in the land. And don’t get me wrong, it certainly [...]

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine for fertility

Fertility is becoming a concern for many people, with complications becoming common for women and men. We are seeing a concurrent rise in endometriosis, polycystic ovaries and other women’s health issues as well as lower sperm counts and lowered quality and motility of said sperm (Morassutto et al., 2016, Ganie and Kalra, 2011, Levine et al., 2017). With less natural and more unhealthy lifestyles as well as couples trying for children later in life we [...]

Chinese medicine for cancer

This has always been a bit of a delicate subject. Cancer has been turned into the bogey man of medicine. It has also been so medicalized, or at least been such a target for the medical establishment that they have monopolized treatment, knowledge, and research on the area. Anyone that tries to go near it will be labelled a quack almost instantly. However, one researcher from the field of Chinese medicine has managed to do [...]

Is acupuncture better or worse than we think it is?

Is acupuncture better or worse than we think it is? For years acupuncturists have been vying for acceptance within the standard medical model and thus have aimed to prove the validity of our clinical experience, which tends to be positive. We have struggled against the establishment, forced to use their methods and terminology to be accepted into the medical mainstream. And now we are getting a strong research base, proving that we can be evidenced [...]

Acupuncture for sciatica

What is sciatica Sciatica is a condition involving inflammation or impingement of the nerve root in the lower back. It causes unilateral leg pain that can descend to the knee or even foot and is often shooting in nature. It can also cause numbness and weakness in the leg in extreme cases. It is estimated that sciatica can affect up to 40% of the population and is more prevalent in 40-60 year olds. Treatment of [...]

Acupuncture for chronic pain – update

A huge acupuncture study into chronic pain was published in April last year. It used nearly 18,000 patient’s data to address the question of whether or not acupuncture was beneficial for a variety of pain conditions, including back pain, osteoarthritis, knee pain and headache. It found, overwhelmingly that acupuncture was better than sham, more than placebo and better than standard medical treatment for all of the above conditions. It was also found to be safe [...]

Research proves acupuncture reduces pain

About chronic pain   Chronic pain is a huge problem in the UK, affecting at least 15% of the population at any one time. Over 70% of adults will suffer from back pain during their lifetime. Chronic pain can lead to depression in 22% of people. 25% of those with chronic pain will lose their jobs and nearly £4 billion a year is spent on incapacity benefit payments for people with chronic pain. The economic [...]

My hopes and predictions for acupuncture for 2018

As you will of seen from my other blogs acupuncture has been getting more and more acceptance, more and more research and more and more understanding, which is great! However, there is still a long way to go. While acupuncture is being recommended for more conditions, by more health institutions and being added to more national health services and health insurance policies, it is still rarely available on the NHS. I don’t imagine there will [...]

Ohio adds acupuncture to Medicaid

As of the 1st of January 2018 acupuncture will be available in…. Ohio! Ok so it isn’t anywhere near the UK, which is a big shame. But this is great news for acupuncture internationally. Acupuncture will be available on Medicaid for patients with back pain and/or migraine. Ohio will be the first state in the Midwest to bring acupuncture onto its Medicaid provisions. This is in a response to the developing opioid crisis spreading across [...]
